But I'm stuck in colder weather

Snow day! Getting even an inch of snow is exciting in these parts. Waking to find 4 inches is thrilling, at least for Irish Jig. After breakfast, those brave enough (it had switched over to sleeting) layered up and headed out for a quick snow ball fight.

Chasing Daddy with a snowball.  It ended badly for her :)

You'll notice Zydeco is missing.  He's smart.  He stayed inside, stayed warm, and stayed dry.  Jig started the adventure with a hat...somehow it ended up on the mini snowman.  Jig is now sporting an awesome case of eczema from the cold...

Apparently, that's how we roll.

Math, Science, History, Unraveling the Mystery

Happy National Pi Day!!!

Classic Rock decided he needed to make a pie for National Pi Day and bring it school to share with his favorite math teachers and good friends.  After some discussion concerning the mess of cutting into fruit pies (his first choice was cherry) and the inability to keep them chilled (lemon pie), he settled on a straightforward chess pie.

Be a geek today!  Our Domestic Church is, sadly, full of geeks.  Some are cooler and higher up on the geek scale, but truly geeks nonetheless.  I remind myself that this means my children will rule the world and support me in my old age - when I will eat lots of pie.

And we'll make snow angels

Taking one for the team.

Gangnam Style?  Really?

With a little help from my friends

Thanks to Zydeco, we have photographic evidence of our first winter storm.  Classic Rock kindly and selflessly headed up the outdoor playtime.  Irish Jig giggled and shrieked her way through her very first ever snow play day.  Lots of hot chocolate and cookies were consumed.  It's a requirement, I think.

Four days of school were missed and all of Classic Rock's semester exams were cancelled - not that he minded one bit!

Mr. Neoclassic and I were at work, sadly, and missed the fun.  Yes, I did say I was at work.  I started a part time, temporary position just prior to Christmas.  I am spending just a few months helping a friend's company clean up their client data bases in preparation for tax season.  I am really enjoying the opportunity to contribute to our household, but I admit to missing my lazy afternoons with my children.  All will balance out soon enough....

Last night, wave two of the storm - or maybe just another one - hit and dumped more snow.  About 6-8" inches this time and my office is shut down for the day.  The boys reluctantly headed out to shovel the driveway runners for Mr. Neoclassic.  Jazz chose to stay indoors, but Irish Jig was jumping up and down to play in the white stuff.  I dressed her as warmly as possible considering she won't wear pants.  There were many layers of stockings and leggings.  After her first face plant in the deep snow, I accepted the inevitable and dressed myself for snow.

That's me, looking like a lumberjack.  We don't own any type
of snow clothing and our hobbled together look is really quite humorous.
And sad.

Another face plant.

A parade of snow plows.  It's the closest thing to a Mardi Gras parade that we'll get.

After the snow fun, everyone gathered in front of the fire and the usual commentary of boredom began.  "Can we invite a friend over/ I'm bored/ How much tv can we watch today?"  I called my girlfriend Karen and arranged a prisoner swap.  I mean play date.  They live several blocks down the road and are willing to drive in snow, which I am not.  Our youngest three are currently at their home and will be returned in a few hours.  I'll keep their children here while both parents conduct business conference calls.  I do love good friends.

But the show is so unprepared now

I am supposed to be packing clothes and a van of supplies for the big OBLI-cation. It's not going so well because I keep stopping to make the clothes....

Left Top: Simplicity 2483 (again)
Left Bottom: Extra long skirt with lace hem for Jazz (simple elastic waist)
Center: See&Sew B5442 (stupid construction method, FYI)
Right top: Another simple elastic skirt with bias tape hemming
Right bottom: Simplicity 4206 (my go-to nightgown pattern)

The entire time I've been sitting at my machines, Jazz has been at my feet stitching up creations.  I taught her the blanket stitch when Jannette mentioned her girls easily mastered it.  Jazz took off running and completed the sweet doggie in no time flat.

She decided it was so much fun, she raided my wool felt stash and prepped several new shapes for car trip stitching.  I love that!

Thankfully, someone in this house is taking the trip seriously (although I think making sure the peeps have decent clothes is serious).  Classic Rock snagged the trip maps and started researching our dining options for the routes.  He's ensuring we don't get stuck eating McDonald's (a fate worse than death for me) or subs from the gas stations.  He's tracked down the Chipotle's and Panera's, as well as local dining favorites like Johnny's Pizza in Ruston.

What would I do without his need for food????

We'll try to stay in touch and post along the way!

If the wind is right you can sail away

Very, very early Saturday morning, I kissed and blessed Classic Rock's sweet head and waved goodbye as Mr. Neoclassic drove him to meet up with the Sea Scouts/ Venture Crew.   Mr. Neoclassic watched the Scouts load their ships and head down the Pagan River as they started their summer grand tour.

Affectionately referred to as the Pagan River Pirates, the Sea Scout "Flotilla" includes five ships and twenty-nine sailors.  The Exuberant, The Defiant, The Rampant, The Valiant, and The Cool Change will navigate their way to Ocracoke, North Carolina with several tour stops along the way.  A few hours after dropping him off, we received a text that the ships had reached the James River Bridge.  We loaded the younger children, grabbed the camera and headed up the road a bit to watch the ships cross under the bridge.

I really need zoom lens capability!

Classic Rock started the trip on The Exuberant, but apparently the sailors are moving from ship to ship as the trip continues.  Personally, I think all the teens want the opportunity to stand aboard The Defiant.
Sent by one of the adults on the trip.  I just love the ship name!

Open to females as well as males, the Sea Scouts and Venture Crew units add fabulous relationship building components to the lives of these young people.  The boys and girls must work together to  plan their trips.  They learn quickly how to deal with various personalities and backgrounds, as well as how to co-exist for days without amenities.  Each sailor pulls his or her weight for sailing duties, watch, cooking, and clean up.  There's a fair amount of good-natured ribbing and trash talk, but always support and respect.

A few weeks before the trip, I made the mistake of walking through the Abandon Ship exhibit at the Mariner's Museum where I am a volunteer.  After reading several horrific accounts, I came home and made a sweeping declaration that my son would not go to sea - ever!  Lucky for Classic Rock, his father and the Scout Master were able to talk me down from the ledge.  I was assured of the hours of training, the extra planning for emergencies, and the reasonably narrow width of the waterways (they're not crossing the Atlantic, after all).  And so, with much prayer and trust, I kissed his head and sent him off.

We get a call each evening with the day's update.  I even got an "I love you, Mama" last night.  Awesome!

What makes a man?

Did you hear the HUGE sigh of relief that recently blanketed the Eastern Seaboard? That would have been Classic Rock delivering the last pieces of his Eagle Scout project. I think his sense of accomplishment was palpable.

I've mentioned these benches in passing, but wanted to do a full post on his project. As part of his work toward earning the Eagle Scout Rank, Classic Rock was required to...

"Plan, develop, and give leadership to a service project
for any religious organization or any school or community."

Last Spring, as he began to formulate his project, we discussed possible organizations he could partner with to provide something needed.  He considered our church, certainly, but then discovered several of the parish's Scouts were already planning projects for the church grounds.  The next obvious organization for our family to consider was the YMCA.  We've been members for so many years and have really seen the difference the Y has made for our family and within our community.  Many people do not realize the Y is actually a charity.  A mission.  We love our local Y and Classic Rock felt giving service to our branch was the best decision.

He spent a few days brainstorming possible projects that would benefit the Y building and grounds, then he arranged a meeting with the Branch Director.  She gladly and joyfully accepted his offer to present the Y with his project and discussed some additional needs of their facility.  After deliberation and input from some of the members, they decided new benches for the gymnasium was the perfectly scoped project.  With some parameters regarding overall dimensions and materials desired, Classic Rock researched designs and plans for simple benches.  Once he'd determined a viable option, he asked to present his information to the Property Committee.   I checked him out of school early, he dressed in his full Class A uniform and readied his power point presentation.  They agreed to his design ideas, loved his estimated cost - about $25 per bench - and encouraged him to move forward.

While he started measuring lumber to create "kits" for each of the 10 planned benches, Classic Rock also campaigned among family and friends for financial support.  We felt so very blessed to have so many supporters (and believers in our son)- almost all of the bench costs were donated and the Y gladly offered to fund the remainder.

Then the work phase began in earnest.  With his father, grandfather, Zydeco and a neighboring Scout offering help, Classic Rock constructed all the bench legs and pre-cut all the remaining boards.  He sent an email to his fellow Troop members and asked for them to arrive early to a weekly meeting.  They constructed five benches that evening and then he finished the sanding and sealing steps himself.

Out with the warped, wobbly, narrow benches!

Humoring his mother with "delivered" shot!

He delivered the first five benches in early December.  The Y staff was thrilled to see the horrible benches go away and Classic Rock's creations take their rightful place.  Within days, the Y members were stopping at the front desk to praise the wider, more comfortable seating.  The shorter length also allows them to be moved around the gym, or even outside, as needed.

During the Christmas break, a few more Scouts spent the day with us building the remaining five benches.  The boys were hilarious to listen to as they told jokes, gave orders, and generally insulted one another (all in good fun, of course).  The younger Scouts earn service hour credit as they assist with these types of projects.  Each Scouting rank requires a certain number of service hours be completed, so this day helped these boys advance in rank.

Zydeco helped Classic Rock seal all the benches with polyurethane, resulting in a massive mess of stickiness in the garage :)  Once the benches were dry, Classic Rock loaded them for delivery.

Now for the paperwork and oral review!  He's almost there!

Clothes aren't what they used to be

Best line of the day....

Classic Rock, upon returning home from the Homecoming Pep Rally....

"They presented the candidates for homecoming queen and the homecoming princesses. Among the 6 of them, there wasn't enough fabric to actually cover 1 of them."

I belly laughed for a full 5 minutes! Glad he's so conservative. I like to think it's good upbringing...

Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around

With great stealth, I climbed the stairs and turned the corner into the "office" room just to see what Classic Rock was doing on the computer. Us sneaky parents do that sometimes you know :)  This is what I saw:

That's the Bible he received for his First Eucharist celebration

He was asked to present a talk on Discipleship during the Mission trip and he was so excited.  Well, he wasn't really "jumping up and down excited", but rather "someone wants to hear what I think" excited.  He asked for our opinions and our stories while he fleshed out his own stories in preparation for his talk.  He included verses from Matthew and John, as well as our family favorite St. Francis of Assisi.  I know it will be awesome - just like he is.  And I know he has a lot to say.

The Mission Trip 2012 Team left yesterday afternoon after stuffing every nook and cranny of the bus with bags, snacks, pillows, sleeping bags, and each other.  They will be on the Eastern Shore, serving at migrant camps and working with families.  They are looking forward to a wonderfully long weekend of service, fun, ministry, and learning.  They think they are teaching, but we all know they are learning.

Here are some scenes from last year's trip, courtesy of the OLMC Facebook files.  They served in the same area and helped with the potato harvest, ran a small Bible School program, and assisted a local Head Start program.

I received a quick text last night to let me know they'd arrived....
"We got here ok.  I'm the youngest one and the tallest one.  Ha."

Today's blog post title is from The Summons by John Bell.  One of my favorite sacred hymns and a great bed time lullaby.
